PD Series 2018-19

This professional development series supports Visiting Fellows at Penn State’s Center for Humanities & Information.

At each session, we will touch base about progress toward monthly research goals identified in the meeting prior, and then focus our conversations as follows:

1. Cover Letters & CVs – Sept. 11, 2018, 2:30-4, Sparks 124
After introduction of the professional development series and other resources, will workshop select cover letters and CVs with an eye toward revision for the academic job market. Will also consider the importance of the CV even when not actively applying for positions.

2. Teaching & Research Statements – Oct. 16, 2018, 2:30-4, Sparks 124
Will workshop select teaching and research statements.

3. Interviews – Nov. 30, 2018, 1-2, Sparks 124
Will discuss preparation for academic job interviews. Will be joined by Gordon Fraser, a senior Visiting Fellow in the CHI & Presidential Academic Fellow at the University of Manchester, and Jyoti Gulati Balachandran, an assistant professor at Penn State.

4. Conference & Job Talks – Jan. 29, 2019, 3-4, 124 Sparks
Will follow a CHI-sponsored talk by K.J. Rawson, founder of the Digital Transgender Archive, at the CAS colloquium on Jan. 25, 2:30-4, in 60 Willard. On the 29th, will discuss strategies for giving effective job talks and conference presentations, drawing on shared examples from Rawson’s presentation as well as the CHI conference.

5. Summer Plans – April 9, 2019, 3-4, 124 Sparks
Will discuss summer plans for research, writing, and professional development.
