For Visiting Postdoctoral Fellows at Penn State’s Center for Humanities and Information

1. Cultivating a Network of Mentors – Oct. 16, 2017, 3:30-5 p.m., 124 Sparks

Will map broader networks, beyond professional development series, and discuss importance of cultivating them in order to make the most of postdoc. Will introduce various resources at Penn State and beyond (job market, research & teaching).

2. Preparing for Job Interviews – Nov. 13, 2017, 2-3 p.m., 132 Burrowes

Will focus on academic job interviews. Three faculty panelists from English and history–Jyoti Balachandran, William Blair, and Claire Bourne–will offer brief presentations on common challenges and useful strategies for negotiating them. Panel will include time for Q&A.

3. Teaching Effectively – Feb. 12, 2018, 11:30-1, 124 Sparks

Will explore strategies for building pedagogical relationships that support course objectives and effective teaching. We’ll be joined by Kirt Wilson–the 2017 recipient of The Malvin and Lea Bank Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of the Liberal Arts–who will give a short talk and then field questions.

4. Planning for Publication – March 14, 2018, 11:30-1, 102 Weaver

Will discuss strategies for creating plans and developing writing habits in order to accomplish publication goals. Will include conversation about planning for larger projects such as a first book manuscript.
